Before we look at some of the common repair needs of fridges and freezers, we’d like to offer some preventative advice which can help not only prolong your appliance’s lifespan, but also minimise the likelihood of repairs being needed too often. It may seem an obvious suggestion but it is one that many people forget to do; defrost and clean your appliances regularly. Many modern fridges have a ‘self-defrost’ feature, but if they don’t, do it at least monthly or when you notice ice build-up inside. For freezers, you should do at least once a year or when you see more than a ¼ inch of ice on the interior walls.
Signs of Problems in Freezers
Get to know the normal operating sounds of your freezer. Once you recognise these, you will be able to more easily notice if something does not sound right. Unusual sounds and a change in temperatures may mean that the evaporator fan needs replacing. If your freezer is not working despite a power supply, there could be an issue with a number of components, including thermostats, timers, compressor, or the control board. Excessive ice or frost can mean a faulty door or lid. With so many components able to cause problems, always call a professional appliance repair service to diagnose and fix.
Common Fridge Issues
The most obvious sign that something is wrong with your fridge is that it is not cold enough. This is usually due to a thermostat problem. If your ice compartment is not working, then the motor may have seized and a new one will have to be installed. It could also be due to valve or pipe issues, and again, this needs professionally diagnosed and repaired. If your fridge is not working at all, then we find this is most often down to a damaged or broken control board, and this part will need to be replaced once our technicians have confirmed it is the cause.
As with ovens, the most obvious solution to internal lights not working is to replace the bulb, and this is easily done on your own. But if a replacement bulb does not solve the issue, then it’s time to call in the professionals from Abbotsford Appliance Repair. Bulb issues may be caused by a problem with your door switch and if this is the case, the switch will need replaced. For freezers, this may be as a result of your light board malfunctioning and this will need replaced by a certified workman from our team.
Many modern fridges and freezers have inbuilt features which help to protect your appliance. A combination of care and using qualified appliance repair and parts companies means you will extend your appliance’s life. If your appliance can dispense water and/or ice, then we recommend that you clean any filters regularly. When cleaning no longer helps, call in one of our team to replace any faulty valves, pipes, or filters.
